The letters HP actually stand for the Houses of Parliament. The initials were first added to the bottle - along with the picture of the Palace of Westminster - after rumours that the sauce was served to MPs in the restaurant.

When was HP Brown first produced?

HP Brown Sauce went into full production just as the 20th Century was waking up. It was originally created by Nottingham grocer FG Garton, who, when stuck <sbr />for cash, sold the recipe and the name to Edward Samson Moore, owner of the Midland Vinegar Company, for just £150.
