Heinz Tomato Ketchup

In the beginning
Our ever-popular Heinz Tomato Ketchup has been part of our range almost right from the start. It was launched in 1876 just seven years after Henry J. Heinz founded the company. The idea behind Tomato Ketchup was that it was a tasty convenience food, “a blessed relief for mother and other women in the household”, because making ketchup in those days was a long and messy business.


Food stuff
We pack an amazing 126g of ripe, fresh tomatoes into every 100g of your favourite Tomato Ketchup which makes it taste great and means it’s a source of the powerful antioxidant lycopene. We also make it free from artificial colours, flavours, preservatives and GM ingredients – and it’s delicious on just about anything.

Top trivia
Did you know that we use enough tomatoes to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool – EVERY day – to make enough tomato ketchup for all our fans?

Milestones

  • 1876: TK is launched as a “blessed relief” for housewives.
  • 1882: We begin patenting our now-famous glass ketchup bottles.
  • 1920s: We expand production to the UK, making 10,000 tonnes of wonderful TK in our first year.
  • 1939-48: Due to food shortages during and after the Second World War, Heinz Tomato Ketchup does not appear on UK shelves for almost ten years. How did they do without it?
  • 1987: The ground-breaking, highly convenient plastic Heinz Tomato Ketchup bottle is launched.
  • 2003: We decide to turn Heinz Tomato Ketchup on its head – the Heinz Top Down Tomato Ketchup bottle is born revolutionising the way sauce is served around the world. But for saucy traditionalists, the glass bottle remains on sale too.


Latest news
We’ve improved our Heinz Tomato Ketchup Top Down bottle giving it a new, more Heinzy feel. The new design has the look of the classic glass bottle while providing the clean cap and better control of Top Down. We’ve also launched two new sizes: Top Down is now available in 460g, 570g, 700g, 910g and 1.2kg bottles.
