"We can’t afford healthier foods"

Healthy foods are dearHealthy food really doesn’t have to cost the earth. Why not:

  • Look out for fresh seasonal produce. Supermarkets often sell fresh produce for less when there’s plenty of it about.
  • Adapt your shop to what’s on offer. Family packs of apples, oranges and salads are great value, especially when you’ve got plenty of mouths to feed. If you’re left with fruit ‘on the turn’, stew it and use in a crumble or pie.
  • Buy in bulk. Choose larger packets of value products offered by supermarkets, such as chicken pieces, fish and vegetables. Use what you need now and freeze the rest for another day. Remember, frozen foods keep much of their nutritional value because most are frozen as soon as they are picked.
  • Don’t forget your local market. It’s a great place to buy cheap, good-quality fruit and veg. For extra savings, go food shopping towards the end of the day, when stallholders often sell produce off more cheaply. The more you shop with them, the more stallholders are likely to offer you bargains.
  • Check food labels. We’re doing our bit to make our labels clearer and easier to understand. Similar products from different manufacturers, such as canned soups, ready-made meals, sauces and desserts, can vary greatly in the amounts of salt, sugar and fat they contain. Always make sure you read the label to find the best option.
